“Galavant” ABC comedy makes waves

ABC is known for its dramatic television series, or comedy television series, but not its musicals. Broadway-style musical comedies like Glee have not graced the channel yet, and if they have, they certainly weren’t successful. Now, ABC is ready to take on the musical comedy challenge with its latest show, Galavant.

Galavant is a medieval musical burlesque that runs through the story of Sir Galavant, played by Joshua Sasse, and his trials as a freelance knight. The comedy takes place over one month in eight half-hour episodes. It is being advertised as a “four-week comedy extravaganza” with popular film and television personalities like Ricky Gervais from The Office, and Timothy Omundson from Psych.

The story begins with Sir Galavant in a drunken state because his girlfriend, Madalena, has been kidnapped by King Richard. Princess Isabella of Valencia knocks him out of his moping with a proposition: help her reclaim her land from the evil King Richard.

The comedy features some older tropes and jokes that have been done in musical parodies such as Robin Hood: Men in Tights and the more recent Spamalot. The jokes are simple, with supposedly regal characters muttering things like “Oh, no, she didn’t”. Nevertheless, this type of comedy hasn’t died out yet.

Robert Lloyd from the LA Times commented on the familiar humor by saying, “if it’s rarely surprising, the joke you know is coming still might make you laugh.”

Galavant was produced by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, two Broadway professionals who have also had a hand in Tangled and the stage version of The Little Mermaid. The movie premieres on ABC at 8 P.M. Sunday.
