Amazon's Television Series Transparent a Huge Success

Proving that the medium of television is indeed changing, Amazon's series Transparent was a winner at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 11th.

Taking home two awards, Transparent established itself as a prime player in television. It won a Golden Globe for Best Television Series, Musical, or Comedy, and Jeffrey Tambor took home the award for Best Actor for his role on the show.

The wins mark Amazon's first-ever Golden Globes, and the show also made history as the first series shown online to win a best series award at the Golden Globes.

Transparent tells the story of a father who comes out of the closet as a transgender individual. The show has been gathering praise, and before the awards show took place, famous stars were sharing their thoughts on the series and its prospects for snagging a Golden Globe.

In his acceptance speech on Sunday night, Tambor appeared sincerely touched, and thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press for “putting [the show] on the map and making people aware.”

Jill Soloway is the creator of Transparent, and admits that she expressed concerns over where to place the show, eventually choosing Amazon. Soloway thanked the transgender community in her acceptance speech, calling them a “family” for the show. Soloway's parents revealed themselves as trans to their daughter three years ago. She was filled with pride for her parents, and then thought that she could create a television show based on the situation.

The series features an actual transgender person, actress Alexandra Billings, who says she did not expect the show to be as popular with viewers as it has become.
