ABC’S OSCARS TELECAST DRAWS THE SMALLEST AUDIENCE IN SIX YEARS

ABC’s telecast of the Academy Awards on Sunday drew the smallest audience in six years. The prestigious event had 36.6 million average viewers, According to Nielsen.
Some critics believe that the lacks of box office appeal among top nominees as well as a lackluster show as the reason as to why there has been a decrease in the number of people who are watching the Oscars.

The figures by Nielsen which were released on Monday showed that there has been a 16% decline from last year. This is and should be a big worry for Walt Disney Co’s ABC given that the Academy Awards show is one of the networks biggest annual draws.
ABC relied on Neil Patrick Harris, who has been praised for his work at awards shows such as the Emmy’s and theater’s Tony Awards, to build on the momentum that was started with comedian and TV personality Ellen DeGeneres, who helped the awards show attract 43.7 million viewers last year. That figure was ABC’s biggest with regards to the Oscars since 200.

In the United States the Academy Awards are known to attract the biggest non-sports TV audience, but this year the show recorded its lowest viewership since 2009. The Academy Awards, which is considered Hollywood’s biggest award show, is set to be broadcasted by ABC through 2020.

41 year old Harris who has gained popularity especially with the young viewers for his role in “How I Met Your Mother” was seen by ABC as a bridge between younger viewers who are the main target of many advertisers and older viewers.

The telecast of the Academy awards reached 60 million viewers in the U.S. overall, according to Nielsen figures.
